Greetings All!
We've had such a huge response to "The Dog's Breakfast" clip that I just had to make sure that I took the time to thank all of you so much for watching and caring and commenting..."Thank you all so much!"
Okay, that's off the to-do list.
On the "Breakfast" front, Jane & I are putting our evil brains together to make one big brain and to create a marketing plan...I love all the research and the business side of making a movies…who knew!? Every stage of getting the film from concept to completion is just about the coolest thing on earth. I kept dreading the next phase and every time I ended up loving every minute of it and even sadness when it was over...I think I know what I want to be when I grow up. I can't wait to get this film (A Dog’s Breakfast) up on some local screens and get a giggle or two out of the lot of you in the process. We're thinking about doing some kind of "Book Tour" approach to the theatrical release (with or without distributors attached). We thought maybe, select a few cities where we can screen the film, do some Q&A's sign a few DVD's maybe, shake a few hands, have a few drinks (fizzy water right now…more on that later!) and say a few hellos. The film has started going out to distributors so hopefully we'll have a better idea of what's available to us in the near future...excited!
Meanwhile back in space...McKay is as talkative as ever...if not more so (hard to believe I know)! That said, it's too much fun and we've had some great guest stars to play with. I really think that you are going to get a kick out of what we've been up to up here in Atlantis...although I have to tell you all...there have been some pretty shocking developments on the story front...and some huge changes on the horizon...I can say no more...but be warned! Also it looks like I'm hopping over to do another SG1 and have yet more fun with poor Samantha Carter in another alternate universe...as if Rodney wasn't causing enough chaos on our side of the universe...now he gets to do it in some fancy threads...Hello Giorgio Armani McKay!
Peace, Love, Laughter and Snarcasm!
D!

Sounds like you're having a fun time! I'm looking forward to seeing ADB. The Serenity fan screenings were hugely popular and I'm sure yours would be too. Just be sure to come to Baltimore!
Best Wishes!
Bahahaha - I love your "mug shot"!
Ooh, more things coming in relation to the movie - cool! I'm definitely looking forward to hearing about it and possibly seeing it (?). Not sure about the latter as I live in Aust and I remember you saying something about it when you were here for a con last year.
With regards to the adventures of Rodney, I was thinking of Ace Rimmer or Ace Rodney (Red Dwarf reference) when I saw some of those promo pics (I think we're referring to the same ep?). Either that or Rodney stole John's hair gel. :)
Cool of you to have your own blog and hopefully we'll catch more of you around at a con or Rodney on screen.
BTW, I've really been enjoying the new season of SGA.
Good luck with the distributors!!! The "Book Tour" approach sounds like an amazing way to interact with fans and get the film out there :D It's great to hear that you are having a blast with the whole process though. But what's the fizzy water all about?
Can't wait to see the SG-1 episode and Giorgio Armani McKay!
Hi David :)
I love the picture (maybe a bit too much cafeine though? ;) )
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to write this blog. (where hopefully you will tell us more about the fizzy water)
I loved the clip of ADB and hope there will be more for me to look at (and show to all my friends)
and I can't wait for the movie to come to the big screen. (preferably in The Netherlands)
Have a great weekend :)
Hi there,
it's great to find out you're having so much fun :-) Love your "mug shot".
You think you and Jane could bring the movie to Germany? There's so many of us here looking forward to it, you have so many fans here, and despite our reputation, us Germans do know how to have fun. Even without yodeling.
Looks like I'm not above begging. :-)
All the best to you and Jane
Skein
Ha! So now it's confirmed that David Hewlett = H0rrid.
Thanks for keeping us all up to date with ADB. You're certainly going to get more than a giggle or two out of me. I laughed more than that with just the little clip I saw.
I love your photo. Looks like you're trying to simulate Sheppard's hair style! And I can't wait to see a Rodney with fashion sense.
Thanks for writing!
Wow Mr Hewlett, you're one of the few people who actually care about interacting with thier fans.. even though I'm sure promoting A dog's breakfast has nothing to do with it ;).
I love crazy mug shots, and you've definately got one of the best out there.. and following up alex's comment with Rodney stealing John's hair gel... "So THAT'S how you get your hair to go like that!!!"
Hopefully non-US residents will be able to see ADB without resorting to "obtaining" it otherwise.
Hopefully you can come down to Australia to promote it or at least give McKay a bigger ego than he already has :D
Thanks for keeping us updated :D
Chez
Thank you for the update! The "book tour" idea is a great one, and definitely a good way of getting ADB more publicity.
Looking forward to seeing it!
Thank you so much for keeping us up to date with ADB. We're all really excited and can't wait. Another thank you is in order. Thank you for signing up to do Wolf P2 in London. We don't get many stars over here and i hope the latest air travel problems haven't put you off coming. Loving S3 of Atlantis, one question 'what was on your underwear in Sadeta?'. Us lot in the McKay/Hewlett thread on gateworld spent ages trying to work it out :) Hope to see ADB in the UK, if not i'll hopefull still see you in Feb. Good Luck.
Red Phoniex
Woah, you're blogging! Is that great or what?
Thanks so much for doing this and keeping us fans up-to-date with the latest news about ADB - I'm crazy about this film since I heard about it for the first time. The pic and the trailer already had me in stitches - I'll surely more than just giggle when I see the whole film! :)
I can only second what skein42 (*waves*) said and asked: Any chance your German fans will be able to see your film? DVD, theatrical release? We also have great film festivals here, btw. :)
I'd do everything to see this film! Although, when I think about it, coming to America to attend one of the "ADB events" you plan might not be possible (Selling the house...no, out of the question... Bank robbery? No, better not, might not get the new SGA eps in prison...). Ok, so maybe I'd just do a lot to see this film. ;)
But seriously, I hope all your wishes and dreams about your film will come true, enjoy every phase as much as you can and have fun!Greetings to Jane, you two are great!
Bye, A.
P.S. Thanks for coming to P2 in February! It'll be my first con, and I'm already pretty nervous, but I'm looking forward to meet so many fellow fans - and you.
yay for Hewlett!Blog, hurrah! And here's hoping there will never be a Hewlett!MySpace, because that would be like worlds colliding.
I am definitely looking forward to ADB, and loving this season of Atlantis. I think Sateda and Uninvited were two of the best episodes yet. Thank you for giving us McKay, because he is fantastic.
In considering locations for the movie, please consider Michigan. No one ever comes to Michigan. It's usually cold as hell here, but we have pasties...the edible kind not the...nevermind.
As an aside, one of the producers mentioned at the ComicCon something about the ratings being low and the danger of SGA not being renewed. Can you do me a favor and find this guy and give him an atomic wedgie for me cause people are shitting a brick..erm... getting a little concerned over at some communities, especially in LJ.
Seriously, we've not had enough of McKay and tell them not to even joke about that stuff.
I'm looking forward to seeing ADB, thanks for posting the update! Also, the cowboy hat=good...
Totally cool news! I'm guessing a fly by trip to Australia for a screening is out of the question :) Instead I send many virtual hoorahs :D
Thank you David for taking a break from your busy schedule to spend a little time with us. I truely enjoy reading anything that you post and look forward to it. How sad is it for that to be the highlight of my day...
I know that I, like many others, am anxiously awaiting any news on your movie.
The picture - scary, just plain scary, but in a good way :)
Keep up the wonderful work. I hope that Mars is doing better.
Sending much love to you as always.
Can't wait to see the movie! I saw your moving Nothing. I loved it! It was fun telling people about it because of the title.
Thank you!
Between the cold meds and the lack of caffeine, about the only coherent thing I can muster up this morning is:
Yay!
Thanks so much for taking the time to tell us what's happening with the film!! Hope you get to do a screening in Scotland sometime...can't wait!!!
I started a Blogger account just to be able to say hi here. How very stalkerish of me 0_o
Hi!!
And keep on enjoying everything that comes with making a movie.
Looking forward to the movie and reading a schedule of screenings or something like it. Thanks for taking the time post this.
Thanks so much for keeping us up to date! I absolutely adored the clip I saw of ADB and I can't wait to see the rest. I'm with everyone else in hoping that your Movie Tour works out because it sounds like a blast.
Here's hoping that you can stop by Colorado, but for this, I'd be willing to travel as evidenced by the fact that I am all sorts of thrilled for the chance to see you at Peg2. Thanks for doing that as well:)
As always, I can't wait to see what's happening on Atlantis, shocking developments and all, especially when it gets me McKay in leather.
*hugs*
Great news about the film. Well done!
Fizzy water? I can think of only one reason why I'd be forced to drink fizzy water! Is there something else to celebrate? ;)
And stay away from electrical sockets please. They're not for playing with...
Hey, nothing wrong with fizzy water. Add some OJ, or cran and a lime and it's actually quite nice. Makes you feel as if you're drinking something without actually...drinking something.
I second the Chicago plea!
(except that I will be at Worldcon in Lost Angles hanging out with Doctor Who people while the SGA con is going on here next week-end)
Blogs are cool, Mr. Man. Good job. Can't wait to see ADB.
Wow, your picture is just so much like Doctor Emmett Brown...yeah, the "doc" in "back to the future"...I'm insane.
I was completly frightened to read that Atlantis will know a big upheaval, I hope it doesn't involve some character death...
I have a question : will you export A Dog's Breakfast in France ? There's a lot of french fan, very impatient to watch it, and after the Sneak Peek in YouTube, some -such as me- are quite hystericals.
Thanks for all the happyness and crazyness that you bring in our live, have fun in your marketing adventure !!
Hallowed are the Hewletts !
you 'mug shot' is a tad scary..
and "Hello Giorgio Armani McKay!"
i can see that plastered on t-shirts....
Hi!
Hey, this blog thingy is a great idea! I almost feel like I'm actually talking to you... Well, except for the fact that I'm actually talking to myself right now. Don't worry, I'm not mad - just British.
Anyway, this was my first chance to catch a clip of 'Breakfast and I gotta say, it looks fabtastic. Can't wait to see the whole thing. It'll be coming to the UK, right? Don't make me give you the Puppy Dog Eyes of Doom!
And lastly, because otherwise I'll ramble on all day, SGA rocks.
Give Mars a belly tickle and a kiss for me because, man, he's a cutie.

I can't wait to see A Dogs Breakfast, if I had the money I would travel to Canada just to watch it, but I am only a poor poor (literally) student.
May have to wait for it to come out on DVD and buy a multi-region DVD player, but YAY! Glad to know it's all going well :)
And as for McKay becoming all cool and stuff...I like him how he is...McKay like...
Anywho...good luck with everything :)
Goddess, I hate marketing and I wish someone would do mine for me. I am proficient at art and science but marketing? Nope. Of course if I learned to enjoy it maybe I'd have an income. In any case, it's refreshing to see an excellent performing artist who has talents offstage as well as on. Besides myself that is (retired ballerina here).
H! I enjoy your performances greatly though I've not seen all that many. Your work in GUP was of such exquisite intensity and I was reminded of the intensity of Jackie Cooper's break down scene in the original version of the film "The Champ." It is both profound and natural. I have never seen anything like that scene but your work comes closest.

Gah! Holy...I really haven't had enough coffee for that mug shot.
Good luck with "Breakfast". Hope it shows up somewhere near Alabama in the not-so-distant future. (Yeah, not exactly holding my breath. This is Alabama, after all.)
Oh, growing up is over-rated. I tried it for a few years, then gave up and reverted. It's more fun this way.
Good luck getting the film out there! I'm really looking forward to seeing it. And whoo! If you do a limited showing or something in Vancouver first, I'll be up there for film school in January anyway! Yay!
Can't wait to see more of Atlantis. I'm loving this season. And your sister is so cute! I can't wait to see her episode! Give Mars a cookie for me. He's such a hardworking actor.
And, you know, so are you, I suppose. Cookie for you too. :-P
The "book tour" distribution process for the movie sounds fun, exciting, and intimate (my brain isn't functioning at the highest levels right now so I can't think of a better word right now). In Wichita, KS, we have lots of smaller theaters that show "smaller" movies, and some of them are designed for the interaction. I'm sure people in any given area could help network to find these places. Wichita also has a local film organization, dedicated largely to independant film. Touring through these would probably fun as well. I'm sure there's something interesting to do in all these places so I'd hope it wouldn't just be a whistle-stop tour for you folks because that might make it less fun and more exhausting! I know of a couple of small movies that do a tour-type distribution of the film, but I haven't kept track of them to know more. "Invisible Children" has an email address on their website for people who want a screening in their area (but I don't know how they're working that). I know "Serenity" did sort of a movie-blitz prior to its opening to show there was interest in a wide-release.
And those are my random musings. Hope you enjoy distributing the film!
Hi David!
well how to say you all of that in english? I don't know if my sentence is english. Not a problem, I have a good excuse: I'm french!!! Yeah!
Do you know if "A dog's breakfast" will exist in France? I hope yes but in my town it will be :no.
I'm so sad.
Where was I? oh yes... you helped me to improve my English. Infact i watch the DVDs of Stargate in English and I become better... and I learn different accent: the canadian (even if sometimes I don't undestand what you say, you speak so quick)(I didn't know but i think you say the Z like the frenchs but it's not sure) and the scottish ^^ Even if Paul's accent is not really true.
By speaking of Paul do you know that some people are fanatic of the couple that Rodney and carson make?? I'm one of them.*proud*
Do you also know that in France, a lot of people like you very much? Some made even a forum and a federation: the FFFDH (in french: federation francaise de fanatiques de David Hewlett)(his is here ==>http://fffdh.discutfree.com/)and we considere you almost as a god. Oh my... we're crazy and young...
Well....so.... I think you are a great actor, and you showed it in Stargate Atlantis, I'm thiking about the episode: Duet and Grace Under Pressure, you're remarquable in it.
I can't compare with your other films because I've only seen "Cube" i find it strange. Oh and I saw you in Without a Trace too.
i'm crazy!! I want you to know that the french are with you!!(even if youre not really knew by here)
will you come one day in a convention in France?? it would be great!!
so goodbye mister Hewlett, and have a nice day. (I don't know what time it is in Canada maybe huh...4 or 5 pm no? here it's almost midnight! and i've to go to bed!!! well have a nice end of afternoon and night ^^
i wish you undestood what I wrote ....
Love reading your news! Always a riot when I'm at work and start reading.
I'm ready for the movie to hit northwest Florida!! Thanks for updating us.
Delighted to read you are having a grand time splashing around in the movie making process, though I would caution - never grow up; it's not worth the effort. How much better to go through life constantly discovering new things you'd love to do forever? My current list of careers I wouldn't mind trying is at 30 something...most totally unrelated to everything else on the list!
Thanks for the update. I would add my vote/location to where I think the "book tour" should come...but no one ever comes to Florida. Rather, I will start buttering up the friends in Chicago, DC, and New York now so they will save the couch for me!
Best wishes on a speedy and triumphant plan to get your film to the masses and in the meantime I suppose we will all just have to stayed glued to our TVs and the ever-entertaining adventures of Rodney McKay. ~Ves
I am looking forward to seeing A Dog's Breakfast. Good luck with distribution!
David! With a blog! What a brave man ;) Thanks for the update and for taking the time to let people know what is going on.
Looking forward to A Dog's Breakfast. I think a tour of small venues would work well and fan promotion is a very powerful tool -- just as Joss Whedon.
All the best.
*waves hello*
Okay, just so you know, that was a truly "Eek!" moment with the picture. *nods* Took me a minute to realize who it was. Hey, never said I was the brightest crayon.
Also, I can't wait to see the movie. And not just from a fan type. Just cause it looks nifty, and shiny things beckon.
SGA news is love. What? Rodney snark, it feels me with me glee. Again, shiny.
*grins* Also? Love the penname. Just saying.
P.S. Hope Mars is doing okay. Poor guy.
Yay! I'm looking forward to seeing ADB very, very much; if you could maybe do a screening in San Diego or Dallas, that would be nifty... ;)
Also, lovely picture!
Excellent picture by the way!! Thanks for the update and hope many follow. Good luck with your possible ventures and keep McKay yapping; if he isn’t yapping, SOMETHING IS WRONG!! I had to really laugh at the “cone of shame”…. I think poor Mars might need to see a doggie therapist after that picture!!
Thanks again…
Zotty
David! Should have guessed that a true geek would blog for his fans eventually. =) Thanks so much for taking the time to type for us.
So, you're bring ADB to Sacramento, right? Right?
S3 of SGA just keeps getting better and better. Progeny was The John and Rodney Show all the way through, absolutely hilarious. Very much looking forward to seeing Kate on the show in a few weeks.
Again, thanks so much for touching base with us here. It means a hell of a lot to us, your fans.
Peace and DHTML,
Barb =)

Hello, David! Add me to the list of folks looking forward to seeing A Dog's Breakfast. I hope you'll consider submitting it to The Phoenix Film Festival, because then I could see it right here in sunny Arizona. The festival is in April, which is a great time of year to visit here, and if I'm not mistaken, falls within your hiatus for SGA. The festival is one of the smaller ones, but it's extremely well-run, and very well-attended.
Also, since you mentioned doing a kind of book tour with the film, you might find Eventful.com useful. What it does is show you how much of a demand there is for something in a given location. It might be a good tool for you to gauge how much interest there is for ADB in different cities. Then you could maximize your promotional dollars by taking the film to cities with the largest number of people who are demanding to see it. Wil Wheaton used it recently to book several speaking engagements/book signings, and it worked out pretty well for him.
And thank you so much for Rodney. I can't even tell you how much I enjoy watching the show every week, and your portrayal of Dr. McKay is a huge part of that. Oh, and I'd like to second the request for a definitive answer on what those were on Rodney's boxers. I say lemons, because what could be happier than shorts covered in deadly fruit?

Ohmiword, I can't believe how fast the comments are coming in! Thanks David for creating your 2 blogs. I love the choice of photo on this blog ~ he, he. McKay is my favourite character! I'm in South Africa so that might be a long way to come show A Dog's Breakfast! However, feel free to come visit ~ I'm a great tour guide. I'm actually going to the Vancouver Stargate con in March next year. I'm really excited. Will you be there? What are the chances of screening A Dog's Breakfast there?
Oh yeah, an Armani clad McKay makes me think of Detective Ray Vecchio from Due South ~ caustically sarcastic but wearing Armani!
D,
thanks for blogging, both here and with ADB! It's very cool of you, and very brave considering how rab- um, enthusiastic and loyal scifi fans are.
I'd also like to thank both you and Jane for being so generous with sharing info on ADB, it actually inspired me to attempt to produce a feature film I've been writing. I'm probably nuts, and I've probably started down the road to complete financial ruin, but avoiding the scary Hollywood machine might just be worth it. So far it's just me and a concept artist, but I hope it grows from there. Actually, *ahem* there's a significant supporting role that would be perfect for you, if you are at all interested (something approximating a pitch is located here, starting the third paragraph down - gosh I'm getting all outgoing *crawls back into protective shell momentarily to tremble in shame*).
Alrighty then, if you've read through all the posts down to here, I'm going to second zoniduck and suggest the Phoenix Film Festival. I worked at it in 2005 and it really is a great festival; it's small but it's growing fast. The guy who founded it and pretty much runs everything has a bit of a short fuse (and it's a ridiculous amount of work, so who can blame him), so treat him with kid gloves and he'll be happy back. The festival has had few celebrities show up in the past, so they are really grateful to filmmakers that do deign to make an appearance (plus the catering is fantastic). Also, if you are at all into nature, Arizona is must-see and dog friendly (compared to BC, rather insect-free).
Also, I suggest a stop at filmfestival.com, it has listings for film festivals world-wide.
The film/book tour approach is interesting. Actor Crispin Glover has been touring intermittantly with his film "What Is It?" since last year. The film is apparently so strange that it's the only way he can get it shown in a theatre, but it's good because no one is going to randomly wander in and get offended by the content. He books theatres whenever and wherever there is enough fan interest. The screening is combined with a Q&A, a slideshow, and a book signing. Frankly I think ADB has broad general appeal but it does seem like a fantastic way to connect with fans.
Barring all other distribution methods, you could always go uber-geeky and stream it online and charge people through paypal to view it :-) It'd make the Aussie, Brit, Kiwi, German, and French fans happy!
take care,
KaOs
David,
Keep up the humor and the good work!

Okay, yeah, second comment, which probably breaks some netiquette rule, but...
I have to second jak's comment that Rodney's blog would be a blast to read.
Geek on,
Barb =)
Howdy.
I enjoyed the clip released; it looks charming. As for the book tour premise, yeah, that could work well. Bruce Campbell showed Bubba Ho-Tep around a bit when he was doing his first actual book tour, and it generated enough interest that it ended up being released.
Alas, he did not do that when he was in Vancouver at the Ridge, but if you do show something locally, I'll line up to see it.
I'm glad you're having fun
Thanks for taking the time to post!!! Cannot wait to see the film!! Giorgio Armani McKay....i can see that in milan!!!wht a fashion show that'll be!!
you are a legend!!!!!
T.
Well, judging by the picture, i see the treatment is working. ;)
David, thank you so much for starting this blog. I've really enjoyed reading about all the adventures that Mars is having over at the ADB blog and its fantastic that we will get to see some of your thoughts too! You've given me so much pleasure over the years with all of the roles you've done and i want to thank you for that. Lifelong fan here! Take care and we'll see ya around. Swansmooches!
I hate to point out the obvious, as humans are apt to do, but... You made a blog!
My friend and I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this movie! I sincerely hope you come to orange county/Los angeles for your tour, if you decide to do one.
FancypantsMckay!
I see we have the same skill for self-photography.
And I'm done.
Yes, thank you for taking the time to post here. And I second the idea of please choose the Baltimore/Washington DC area for a screening. I'll brave the traffic ten time over to come. Forever a fan of yours!
have you seen pictures of the stargate that gary kirk built in his yard? it looks very neat. i dont know how to do links here, but here are the addresses. one picture here www.elfevents.com/index.php?id=94 and the other is here www.elfevents.com/index.php?id=95
i like your crazy picture. but now the rodney mckay munchkin song is going thru my head from all the people who mentioned ace rimmer:
When there's disaster, he will save the day
He's loud and he's tactless, come what may
But without him Atlantis would go astray
He's Rodney, Rodney, Rodney McKay
Far smarter than you are ev'ry day
His brash manner keeps some folks at bay
And he thinks that's really okay
He's Rodney, Rodney, Rodney McKay
Full of technobabble and geeky display
But he'll never be mistaken for Captain K-(Hey!)
Want to know if it's cold? look his way!
With technical brilliance and proficiency
His command of wormhole physics is uncanny
How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me
Ask Rodney, Rodney, Rodney McKay
There isn't anything else to say
And if you play your cards right, then he just might come round to stay
He's Rodney, Rodney, Rodney McKay
There're too many rhymes with which to play
Better stop now before this goes astray
Here's the end with no delay
In case you haven't found it, www.withoutabox.com is a good place to find and enter film festivals. AND you can get a whole $5 discount if you use it to enter the Ashland Independent Film Festival (www.ashlandfilm.org), which has an early entry deadline a handy two months away. While in Oregon, you can enjoy terrific Shakespeare, tasty microbrews and a lovely collection of trees, all of which you lack in British Columbia. Who can resist visiting a state where one of the most popular university's logo is a big, golden O?! That O stands for your golden opportunity, buddy. Trust me on this.
Thanks for the updates. A "book tour" is an awesome idea, wherever you end up. I'm looking forward to seeing "A Dog's Breakfast." I'm sure you'll get distribution (if you can't get it, then I fear for the rest of us). When you do, I hope you'll also consider making the script available.
I'm so happy to hear you're having fun with all the phases of making and releasing A Dog's Breakfast. I can't wait to see it!! I hope that the film (and you!!!) can come to the Chicago area or somewhere around or near Illinois. The tour idea would be amazing. We'd all love to see you!!!
Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us.
Have a great week!

I looOoove your blog, and like aquaura, I thank you for taking time to write to your fans...

I was TOTALLY thinking Ace Rimmer, too! I kept expecting them to say "What a guy!" when Rod left for his home dimension.
hi david! love the pic :) u look good when ur crazy jeje(i should know) glad that ur having fun!
take care

I would just like to say that I have followed all of your productions and parts. I am a big fan of the SciFi series SG Atlantis. It is the only show that I am truly dedicated to other than the norm of watching shows when I can. I have to say good job in ADB. I laughed so hard! I was wondering, do you feel better in the SGA role as "Rodney" or do you feel more comfortable in your other roles? Also have people been coming up to you and asking for your autograph? I have to admit that I would.:D One last thing and then I will not try to bother you. Are the Colorado scenes real? I have lived in Colorado and I have been down to Colorado springs before. Haven't seen any of the places that take place in either SGA or SG1. Thanks for your hard work and time!
