Had the pleasure of a few visitors this week that I'd like to let you know about....

Melody and her brother Everest came by and visited the Atlantis set after Melody won a charity auction. Her prize was a "walk on" role during the episode "The Game" (I believe), so you all have to keep an eye out for her lingering in hallways and looking wise and important before Ancient consoles. Melody was a bit timid with yelling "Action" at first, but after snarkastic abuse from me (that's what I'm there for) she was screaming it out like the best directors I've worked with. Melody and Everest were a very classy duo and even went so far as to leave us all thank-you cards and a book...which Jane has already stolen because "oh goody! I always meant to read that one". Thanks to Melody for looking out for others and getting herself a day of sitting around listening to me flub lines!

Next up we had Angela...poor Angela, who for some unknown reason, identifies with McKay and actually admits to it! She finally explained the term "Thunk" to me and showed off her McKay teddy bear while I was "in hair", which generally consists of moving what little there is around to make it look like there's more there, a highly technical science that requires a vast team of highly trained professionals. I ended up stealing teddy's voice box and recording my own Angela-specific abuse for it to spew when poked in the stomach. Not many Teddy's in the world come packing that kind of snark! I have to remind Angela, to pay attention to her day job as she works on satellites. I don't fancy one of those things crashing down because she's drifting off on one of her "thunks"! Angela had also won a charity auction so was "walking on" dressed in medeaval sackcloth as a member of the McKay worshipping country of Geldar...a wonderful country decorated with flags and painting of me...Heaven! Thanks to Angela for her charitable donations and her abuse for me not attending more conventions...please take care of that bear!

Angela had to share the set with Jane's father, Mr. Don Loughman who has told me many times to start calling him Don instead of Mr. Loughman...thus Mr. Don Loughman. He can be seen in "The Game" working hard with quill and parchment while McKay tries to persuade the beautiful and talented Laura Harris that while he was not a God, he was just as smart as one. Mr Don Loughman, by the way, is 86 years old, the father of the most brilliant and attractive woman on the face of the planet (Jane) and watches both SG1 and Atlantis every week with his friends Kathy & Paul...the creators of a mean curry buffet I might add. I think they're going to be rather jealous when they see their weekly guest up on the big screen (they've got a great TV) writing up McKay's country of Geldar's plans for war against Sheppard's feeble country of Hallona, and chatting up the blonde background at the same time. There really is nothing like a good English curry!

Last and least...only in stature...was the beautiful Liz who came to us from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. What a treat she got! A very grumpy McKay (and Hewlett for that matter) in a full space suit with a brutal day of techno-panic for the episode "The Ark". You won't be seeing Liz in any walk-on roles, but you should know that I worked her like a dog doing all the digital effects shots. You see, when they shoot a scene that requires digital effects, they have to get a clean, actor-less plate shot. I'm not sure of the specifics (I guess I better find out) but it requires some poor self-conscious member of the FX team to stand before the cameras holding a grey ball on a stick for a few seconds. The unfortunate soul then has to move the ball around a bit, spin it to reveal it's shiny silver side and then get laughed at and generally mocked by the crew. Liz has changed all that. She has now elevated the grey ball into an art form, and as a result got more than a few well deserved standing ovations. So much for me trying to make her life misery! She also convinced Martin Wood our director to let her have a go at the directing side of things. She quickly learned how to deal with difficult actors (I was the only one there for most of the day so she learned quickly) and soothed me about my performance with calming words like "That was only slightly terrible" and "good enough". All the best to her and her family. That said, I expect to be working with her again shortly. I've made her promise to hire me when she gets out of film school. Admitedly Liz is only 15 years old, but I need all the work I can get!

Peace (I'm a hippy now)

D!

First to post!!! At least while I am typing this out. I guess checking this blog 50+ times a day worked out for me. A visit to the Atlantis set would be a dream come true for me, especially meeting David Hewlett. ;) I could not think of anything better. I think I could deal with the snarcasm because my husband is exactly like McKay, and my kids even agree. I would be pretty good at sending it right back.
I am so glad that SGA was renewed for a fourth season. Way to go.
I am looking forward to McKay and Mrs. Miller. Two McKays, what more could one ask for....

Keep up the fantastic work David.

As always, sending you much love and admiration.

Jesus! You reprogrammed the bear!?
You are McKay aren't you?

I'm glad you posted, this weekend seems to be sucking (not in a good way) royally for most people. The post made me smile. I'd share my Cold Stone ice cream with you if I could, but my cat at the last of it.

Ha! My husband, also named David, has been gifted that book as well. (By his sister, which I guess really ought to have warned me..) Jane wins at life for stealing it from you.

Common Ground was excellent by the way -- my favorite episode this season so far. McKay was terribly cute, acting all Sheppard-y. And Ronon! With the looming! Er...I'll stop now.

Have a good week!

I have to say that you are a very evil man with all the spoilers for these epsiodes that we won't see until next year sometime...but keep 'em coming. Rather have hints and teases than nothing at all.

Congrats on the renewal for season four! Need any new writers up there?

Keep up the good work and all of the McKay snark!
-dee

PS: Should I even mention the McKay Moose in my office at work? Or the picture of it on my blog? Nope. Not going to do anything like that. Not even going to mention the Ronon Bear a friend of mine has either. Neither has a voice box though...

Your posts always make me smile. :)

I have to say, I have no idea what "Thunk" is...kinda afraid to ask...lol.

A very big congrats on Atlantis getting renewed for a 4th season.

Sounds like a wonderful day on set for everyone involved! Well, except for Teddy who had his speaking bits reprogrammed and now is terribly snarky when poked in the stomach! Woe. I'm really chuffed that you take the time to let us know what is going on in the life of you.

You know, reading about these auction winners (or any kind of contest that allows you to get a "walk on" role on your favourite TV show) actually makes me a bit depressed... but maybe that's just the green jealousy monster in me screaming out!

I understand that having some overly excited foreigner chasing you around the set can be annoying, but... why can't there be these kind of things for international fans?!

And hold on...
Dude, you actually reprogrammed that teddy bear?! For real?!
I'm scared of even consider asking you how on earth you've managed to do it...
How incredibly McKay of you, mr. Hewlett! =D

I am totally looking forward to 'the Game' now. You make it all sound brilliantly funny, even silver ball fx shots.
I must admit I too have been identifying with McKay lately. I passed out at work last week, and got stared at quite openly when I told the triage nurse I passed out 'from manly hunger'. I assumed it was probably the manly part that confused him, but it turns out he was just surprised I was an SGA fan too (I guess I don't look the type?).

Of course I admit to loving McKay, he's snarktastic! =) Of course, I also admit to loving Beckett and Zelenka too, but that's neither here nor there.

Regarding the satellites... it's not mine that you have to look out for. They'll burn up like pretty little meteors on re-entry. It's things like the ISS and Hubble that you have to worry about.

And you know, if you really get the itch to attend a North American convention, there is DragonCon in Atlanta, GA. They have an excellent British Sci-Fi track with Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Blake's 7 and even Tomorrow People for when you're not working. Plus the dealer room is HUGE; I'm sure you can find all kinds of Doctor Who stuff to spend your money on. ;)

Anyway, I may have said this once, but it bears repeating: Thank you! You and the rest of the cast and crew have given me an experience I enjoyed tremendously and will never forget

Lol I am totally impressed with abusive teddy recordings! Perhaps it can be a task for all to record and snarky message on a teddy in a toys store for a random kid to purchase and enjoy :)

Peace, hippy Dave (hehe),

Hmm, yes Angie mentioned her lovely adventures and did not reveal any secret spoilers, but said that she had a ball!

I'm rather envious - I would love to see the sets (I don't really care for being an extra) and meet the writing team and the cast.

Yes, pity it's a holiday next weekend or something - not American, have no clue, just found out - but I'm looking for to McKay and Mrs Miller too. 2 McKays tormenting the poor folks on Atlantis...

Poor Rodney - he has his sister and temporal/dimensional twin to compete with - is it going him a complex?

Uh, that's an interesting pic BTW... uh I dont't know many people who willingly dig their nose so publicly but uh you look cool! Can't see anything wrong with the hair, matey.

Take care :)

It's Atlantis year 3 and you just found out what "thunk" means? David, David, David. So busy working and so unaware of your fandom. That's kinda cute, actually. Oh, wait, that's a "thunk" comment, best to post that elsewhere.

You're just tempting us with all these spoilers, aren't you? Not that we weren't going to watch in any case. What does it take to be a ratings family anyway? Everyone I know watches both Stargate programs. Well, I do hang out with an exceptionally intelligent group of people...

Another congratulations on the Atlantis renewal.

And I also want some Hewlett convention appearances in the States. I vote for DragonCon, too. I think Paul had a good time last year and Rachel is coming this year.

Thanks so much for these little peeks into your world.

(By the way, what book is that? Don't make me take a print of that page to the bookstore to find out.)

Peace back at ya.

Wow, you're picture is...well...I hope my little sister will not do the same by faniticism for yourself^^

McKay isn't so bad isn't he ? I'm sure a lot of fan could stand him easily, if they treat his ego with the respect it deserves. Such a genius must be considered with admiration !
Will you write an "Atlantis Set Touristic Guide" ? I'm sure a lot of person will buy it, you could show them McKay's bedroom, McKay's coffee mug, McKay's bathroom, McKay's fave sandwich, McKay's teddy bear...and by the way Sheppard's shampoo, Beckett's Scotch bottle (oh, please, don't be naive, how could he heal Wraith without a drink before ?) and of course Teyla's big sticks and Weir's armchair...

Anyways, every stargate thing a gater could get, he'll gate it !

Just in case you were wondering whether anyone is interested in your ramblings about work, I personally love reading stuff like this. You have a real flair for storytelling (and a very engaging style) that makes your posts a lot of fun to read. I suppose it doesn't hurt that you're writing about one of my favorite TV shows, but I have a feeling I'd enjoy your posts anyway.

Now that I'm done with the fawning and fangirling portion of my comment, I have to give you a wag of the finger for not giving a spoiler warning at the beginning of your post. You didn't spoil me any, since I've already read about The Game over at GateWorld (And let me just say, it does a fangirl's heart good to find out that McKay and Sheppard have been playing this game for two years. It's nice to know that the two of them have a friendship beyond what we see in the episodes.), but I imagine there are a lot of spoiler virgins who didn't know anything at all before reading your post. Just a little something to be aware of when interacting with the fandom.

Thanks again for posting!

great job with the teddy bear, hope you'll give us some clues to reprogramm others... ;-)

To those wondering about the book, it's one of a series of popular kids' picture books about a badly drawn little boy who shares the same name as a certain actor whose blog we all read religiously - although personally I use the handy RSS feed and don't have to resort to checking the site 50+ times a day ;-) Next up is figuring out how to get an automated alert on my cell (aka. mobile).

DH, you have proven your 1337 geek skillz with the bear - am very impressed. Crack your neurons on this:

If you are really meticulous, there are two hidden messages to decypher.

Meanwhile, traveling on the film distribution train of thought, check out page 96 of the September issue of Wired magazine - it's an article on how Netflix is entering the theatre distribution business, by know where a film will do well ahead of time because they know how preferences of users correlate to physical geography.

always good to hear from the set and upcoming eps. Not that I have seen any eps from season 3 (well.. they aire 2x07 "instinct" next wednesday!that is real torture! thank god for the internet ;)). I watch some other nice Hewlett-Stuff and then go on with an SGA marathon.
Watched recently "Desire and Hell at Sunset Motel" and *hihi* nice sunglases^^ the clicking with teh fingers-scene in that restaurant wasgreat. Love it! another weird movie added to hewletts list *lol* Just love it. But "Elevated" was much more weird^^ jeez I just realized I made a hewlett-marathon *eek* "elevated" "autoerotica" "clutch" the "The Campbells" ep,... and still ave some stuff to go...
I didn't even realized that. OMG!

anyway..was was I gonna to say? *think*.. *think harder* .. nah forgot it.

I'm also happy for a fourth season (I do need my SGA-DRUG!). Maybe Bates returns.. nah don't think so. But if cours ethey have to kill and write out two hot guys from the show *miss Grodin and Bates*

ups off the track again. But this action thingy is a nice thingy only that it mades me don't like living in Europe. Seems all so far away *meh*

btw. any changes that there is a movie with Vincento Natali and David Hewlett again? love those films!

You could probably market the teddy bear thing, you do realize that? SGA fans everywhere, buying McKay-abuse. Trading, even -- oooh, you got the Fumbles McStupid rant? I got the "Natural Selection is NOT working!" one...

The Make A Wish foundation thing? Very cool. I worked with sick kids, and things like that are ... huge. I don't know if you know that over at SGA. But it is.

And as my spousal unit is experiencing scalp deforestation (he blames the pine beetle and me, alternately), allow me to say, hey. Some men waste their hormones on hair. Others put them to better use. *g*

Enjoy the day,
and Namaste!

I'm so proud. I think.

I wish I could have been there too (of course so does everybody else here)

So you reprogrammed the teddy bear :)
Nice :) It's good that you like teddy bears because there will be more of them in your future.

I know some friends of mine will bring there Stargate Teddy's to P2.
And I will bring my Borg Teddybear.

It should be interesting to see if you can reprogram the BorgTeddy before he assimilates you ;)

He's allready made some victims in the SGA cast- Rachel,Loyd and David N have allready been assimilated.
And I'm hoping you will be next.

Don't worry, it won't hurt :D

At 2:18 PM, Blogger Arlessiar said...

Wow, I really envy these people who could spend a day on the set of SGA – although, being near you and your snarcasm can be hard sometimes, I think. ;)

And yes, thanks to Angela we already knew what you did to the Rodney bear! You bearnapped him, gave him a new recording – a pretty Hewletty thing to do I think. Well, I have to admit that it’s pretty cool that the bear also has your voice now.

Now you know what “thunk” means? That took you three years? Well, you live, you learn. ;)
Angela warned us that she told you about the thunk thread - I will not go and change any of my xxxx posts there (wait, where was my life again? Ah there, under the sofa…), what’s done is done. *g* But since this whole fandom thing must be overwhelming or even be a bit frightening sometimes, let me say that we’re not always a bunch of silly girls. We’re still pretty harmless, and we can be serious too. If we try real hard. Drop by and visit us someday if you like. Or probably not, might be better for your mental health.

So, your lovely sis Kate also has a blog now? Online Hewletts United, hu? *g*
Your nephew is really a cutie, by the way.

And please don’t ever stop these sweet love declarations for Jane! Not many guys talk about that so openly - I’m glad to hear that you two are still so in love! Even if Jane steals books. :)

Identify with McKay? Hard, I think. But he’s definitely my fav character on SGA. In real life I’d probably hate him, especially if he was my boss. But as long as I can just watch His Snarkiness on TV he’s adorable and really the most interesting character. Weird, this attraction.
Wish TPTB would grant Rodney a few more serious scenes and a bit more success though. People always laugh at him when he screws up, but they hardly praise him if he does something right. He may have a big ego and believe that he’s godlike, but underneath it all he’s craving attention and approval I think.

By the way, don’t worry about the hair, there’s still plenty left. Could be worse. Or the stylists really make a pretty terrific job…

Thanks for the update! You have a great way of writing, reading your entries is always a funny and interesting experience. This new entry and the crazy pic really made my day! I’ll probably lose my job now as I should be working and not reading your blog, but hey, one has got to have priorities… XD

Now... how do I replace the recording in my daughter's Build-A-Bear with an audio-cap of Rodney? Hmm. She knows your voice, you see, and she's fond of saying "I know, can you believe that?!"

Hi!

Several people here have asked what "thunk" actually means. Here's my impression:

Roaringmice is shopping at Tesco, looking at, say, their lovely selection of pre-prepared Chicken Tikka Masala. She feels someone move in beside her, and hears a male voice ask her, "Can you pass that to me?" Turning toward the man, she realises that it's David Hewlett. Numbly, she tries to smile, and hands the Chicken over. He thanks her and turns away.

Thus, THUNK. As if she's been hit by a blow to the head.

As for "whump", which some also asked about: that's the mental or physical abuse of a character. For example, if you saw SGA's most recent episode, Joe Flanagan's character, Sheppard, got seriously whumped. Can also be used as such: that episode had some serious whumpage.

Hope this helped.

thunk
: The sound made when one hits the ground due to a superb male/female specimen.

In other words, drool-worthy.

whump: A fandom term, commonly used by fan fiction authors (particularly in the Stargate genre) to describe physical and/or mental abuse laid on a character in a story.

Interestingly, if you google "thunk whump definition", the first link is to a McKay/Hewlett Thunk Thread entry on GateWorld.

Oh, and I just noticed this, but I think you want to be a "hippie", David. If you're "hippy", that suggests a wideness is a certain area of your body. Which thunkers appreciate. The body part, not the there-is-definitely-none wideness.

So, is Mr. Loughman single? He made me think of my 85-year-old friend Janie, who showed me up in Spanish class last night by doing her homework when I didn't. I did write a very nice composition about Stargate Atlantis in Spanish, but that only got me the evil eye from the teacher since I didn't have the actual assignment finished. She relented a little when I promised to bring chocolate cake AND my verb conjugations next week. She even took my composition and agreed to correct it for me, although there was some eye-rolling involved.

We love McKay because he is so funny, and perhaps because my 15-year-old son resembles him so much. He told his Digital Works teacher today that she took way to too long to get to the point when explaining copyrights to the class. He assures me he said it politely, but he also said she didn't seem to appreciate it. At least he was polite...

I'm enjoying your blog and all the little spoilers you've been giving for upcoming episodes! I'm of course looking forward to "McKay and Mrs. Miller" as I've been hoping to learn more about Rodney's sister ever since she was mentioned in "Hot Zone" and "Letters from Pegasus"! Wow. I cannot imagine you have time to read ALL of the comments you're getting, even with anonymous posting disabled, but man, I can't think of a better way to announce, "I'm one of you, see!?!"

Anyway, enough of that. (She didn't explain "squee" did she?;)

"You see, when they shoot a scene that requires digital effects, they have to get a clean, actor-less plate shot. I'm not sure of the specifics (I guess I better find out) but it requires some poor self-conscious member of the FX team to stand before the cameras holding a grey ball on a stick for a few seconds."

I didn't see any comments on this; it's so they can get the lighting and reflections right. Digital elements stand out like a cardboard cutout if the lighting color and direction don't match, and nothing screams FAKE like a reflective surface with no actual reflections on it. (Yeah, knowledge I got. Money & connections, not so much;)

hi david
Just so you know, there is a future Stargate Atlantis employee on your blog/website. I'm friends with Mhera, and she is applying to go to film school in Vancouver, and is bound and determined to work on Stargate Atlantis someday soon. So you may have more youngin's bossing you around before you know it. Keep up the good work, and I hope you come visit us at Toronto Trek real soon! (Hint Hint)
