Alright... in an attempt to rejoin the Internet, at an early 1990's level, I have spent a long weekend nerding it up on the world wide web in the hope of putting together something you hipsters refer to as a website? I'm slightly obsessed and obsessive about the idea of having one online Hewlett hub of personal, professional and production information. Right now I'm using the domain dGeek.com if you want to have a look and kick the tires and give it a whirl. Advice, suggestions and submissions are welcome! If things work out, I'll start pointing all my domains the dGeek way.

Happy HTML, CSS and RSS to you all...

Oooh! First to comment. Yay me! A website, eh? I was never so internet-savvy. I'm lucky I can even get into my own stupid blog. lol But I'm going to check it out right now. Oh, and may I add--Mars is almost as cute as my doggies. :D Just had to say it. Can't wait to see you and your sister tomorrow in McKay and Mrs. Miller! Yay!

I'm not an expert on these things, but that looks like a fine site. I am so looking forward to that movie. One Stargate actor: good. Two Stargate actors: better. Three or more: one of the few things that can have me giddy with excitement. (Yep, huge geek.)

Mars is a cutie. Rottweiler/terrier, is he? I'm hoping that's some kind of Standard/Giant Schnauzer or something, because if we're talking Scottie or Jack Russell...I do not want to know how that came about.

Your powerbook!!! Ah, nothing like a G4 PB. :) I love mine. And you're the reason that I own one. You know, geekasms and all that excitement that could be felt whenever you talked about it. So I finally bought one last year.

The domain? That's so great! The name could not be better!
I'll take a closer look at it as soon as possible. Which would be now, I think, even though I guess I should go to bed... (1am here...)

Sleep is overrated anyway.

I just love that Pic of you and Mars with your laptop, so cute. I wonder if Mars was much help with the site. I like the name of your new site and it has nice content. To me it lacked something but I can't say what. I'm so enjoying all your webstuff.
Oh , and get your sister a copy of McKay and Mrs. Miller will you, she's complaining on her blog that she doesn't get Atlantis where she is and can't see the episode. Love ya.

btw. why only 70x70 icons? jeez another format to get used to. 100x100 on LJ and 90x65 (65x90) on my online board.. anyway I'm really looking forward to the board there^^

The website too.
LOL

Love you lots!

At 5:08 PM, Blogger Neth Dugan said...

Great site! I don't know a lick of CSS or HTML but it does look good.

Filled out the Request a Screening page, didn't leave any contact numbers because I don't know them, just the names of the cinema itself.

But Mars is, still, an increadibly cute dog. Looks like he likes to cuddle up, and get on the furniture. Hope you don't have too many problems with dog hairs, like we do!

But yeah, great site. Hope all is going well on set.

Hi David,

First off, that picture of you and Mars is awesome. I love it.

Well dGeek looks good at first glance. I will be having a closer look at it soon. I'll get back if I have any suggestions. I actually have a fourm or two online and I am in the process of starting a website with a friend...call me crazy, but I think its fun building a website..lol :D

Hello David! I will make you some awesome graphics, headers/banners and stuff--no charge, I need stuff to put in my portfolio (I'm applying for graphic design schools soon)! My email's in my profile if you're interested.

What? Dumb it down next time for me David. LOL!

Cool on your site, love it, joined it, have the t-shirt. (Hey that's an idea.)

No suggestions yet...but be warned I'll be contemplating it. Muahahaha!!!

Hi David,

I love the domain name and the site looks good too.

I'm looking forward to McKay and Mrs Miller tomorrow. And I agree with Sandra. There has to be a way you can get a copy of the episode to Kate so she can wacht it too and won't have to wait until 2017 to see it.

Greetings,
Chantal

Ah, so professional. I need to brush up my own skills somewhat, I think... I have my own domain, too: unfaithful-mirror.net. (and yes, that is Torri on the blue and green layout.)

At 5:22 PM, Blogger slodwick said...

Wow! Quite the snazzy setup you've got there, eh? And the domain really is genius!

*pokes around*

At 5:25 PM, Blogger Erynn said...

I have tons of 100x100 icons for LJ, but nary a 70x70 one to be had, and no graphics program to fix the problem with.

*weeps*

Is there any chance the format for icons on dGeek could be shifted, or is that just how it comes with the software package?

In either case, don't spend too much time sweating it.

At 5:30 PM, Blogger Jennifer said...

I can't believe I typed "Love you lots"

Hee! Another place for me to explore! And by explore I of course mean stare at and wish I knew what the hell I am clicking on. I am sooooo technologically challenged! Ah, well, I am sure the pictures will keep me happy! ;)

Speaking of pictures... I just adore the look on Mars's face! He looks like he is waiting for his turn on the laptop! Hee!

*loves*

At 5:47 PM, Blogger Jessie said...

*blinks* Why is that your website is better than mine? Oh, right. You actually update yours more than once a year. Could be one reason, gotta say. Plus, I just use frames to do everything. Cause I'm lazy like that. And I can't do tables, php, any of that complicated stuff. *nods* But yours is pretty, dangit!

Oh, right. *goes to sign up*

One of these days I'm gonna kidnap Mars. You know this, right? Just one day poof he'll be in my room, like magic.

Side note: Too bad you couldn't get to the Con this weekend. I have a feeling another dorky boy would have been even better. Of course, meeting the nice cast (seriously, wow, y'all have all the nice people around on the cast, don't you? y'all kidnap and tell them to work on your cast or you'll make them watch Teletubbies for eight hours straight. i knew it.) was awesome in any case.

At 5:53 PM, Blogger jifferhorn said...

okay, I was honestly trying not to go all fangirly on you but...

that picture: with the g4, the cutest darn mutt in show-biz, an you looking simply pulchritudinous (shameless thesaurus usage, i admit) is enough to bring out the fangirl in anyone.

i thought mckay and mrs. miller was going to be the best birthday gift ever (my b-day = sept. 8th), but this is probably a close second. a framed, autographed copy would be about the only thing that could top this. ;-) (hey, a girl can dream, can't she?)

anyway, i love your web portal. i can't wait to see what the future holds for dgeek! :-)

the site looks great!! good name. and i love the green and white. green is always a good color! ive tried to start a site a couple dozen times but always ended up forgetting about it or giving up lol. good luck!!! :D

Mars reminds me of the only dog that ever liked me. i dont have a good track record with dogs. lol. or maybe it was just me being afraid of all dogs. i need to get over that cause they really are the cutest. ;)

snap on the laptop front.

I've not heard of 'Joomla!' I've used other CMS's for clients before but I'm always on the look out for new ones, thanks for pointing it out :)

At 6:11 PM, Blogger amikara said...

*crawls out of lurker's hole*

How comes that such a big dog as Mars manages to have the most adorable expressions? (Oh and, any chance to convince the man sitting next to the dog to smile more often? :D *coughs* Blame that statement on the way too little amount of coffee I had today.)

I really like how the website is set up! I may have some knowledge about html, but css is entirley (ok, not entirely, but almost) beyond my range. I'm tempted to fill out the screening request, but I'm not really sure if they're also meant to be used for requests in Austria (But to my defense, we do have english cinemas in Vienna. Even two of them!).

And for the record? dgeek is just perfect. :D

Very cool that you are using Joomla! I guess that lets us know where you stand on the whole Mambo split thing. :D

Once I get my URLs moved over to a new hosting company next month, I hope to set up Joomla as well. Perhaps you could provide some pointers as you work on the site. ;-)

A weekend working on a website? What a nerd! Not like I didn't do the same thing all summer... CSS is fun.

Site looks pretty good. I've played around with Joomla a little bit, but I stay away from CMS for the most part since I have no need for them. I tried making one, but that went no where. Maybe once I learn PHP? Hah.

And the domain name is awesome.

Thanks again for keeping us updated.

Hi David,

First, love the pic of you and Mars. Great.

Second, dGeek looks great. Before I fill out the form for a showing, I have to spend a couple of days finding out soe info. We have two old, restored movie theaters which now show independent and limited released films. We also have a university theater which has been used as a 'test' theater (the second Dalton James Bond film ran here for a month before major release) I'll see what I can find out for you.

Have a good week.

Thanks for your time.

Hi David,

Had a quick look at your website and didn't have much time to browse coz I'm at work and supposed to be working!

So far, I like it. I like the colouring, the font and the layout but I think I had problems finding some stuff - nothing major though... will let you know later via feedback etc at the site.

Love the pic - Mars just looks so cuddly and gorgeous. I've always meant to ask you this... uh, when you bring him on to the SGA set, does he get "hang out" with the other dogs - eg Torri's and Rachel's dogs?

I was thinking that he'd be one lucky dog to have so many girl-dogs around! :)

Take care. I love Keane too - but weird band - why don't they like the guitar??? I had a CD of theirs that I lost for a year and then found it again when I cleaned a cupboard!

Take care,
M

Love the domain name and that you're finally getting back on the web! I'd stumbled on to Darkyl Media back when it was still around while looking for Cube-related things.

I like the green and silver and white combination for the layout, but I think there needs to be more definition between the columns. For instance, in the dog blog, the top entry is easy to read, but once you scroll down, your eyes get a bit lost in the black text on white background. Could just be me though. I haven't played with Joomla! so I'm not sure if that's something you can control.

And I will shut up now before I try to view the CSS and deconstruct it because I'm a geek.

Hi!

Just look everywhere I can in your dGeek and I think it is very succeed. Good colors, very clear ( arranged you know). The idea is great and I think "I'll be back"
(Terminator, get out my body. Call an exorcist please!).
Your dog is very cute, a little big for me but very cute.
(And I say that while I'm listenning Mozart's Requiem... "This is the story of my life") ir's a Rottweiler, isn't it? (such a question tag! Where's my english teacher?).

Today I won't speak more, just a ticket in fact. XD

Didn't you say in a interview once that you didn't post on the 'net, just lurked around? Look at you now! Making us signup and have to think of yet another password! 8-)

Will you be abandoning Blogger in favor of your new site or will you be maintaining both?

I know of one other actor who writes the code for his own site, Wil Wheaton, of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the movie Stand By Me. The two of you should get together. That would be a geekfest. He has a Powerbook, too.

Speaking of coding a website, I want to say that I miss the sites for Cube, Treed Murray, and Nothing. I was one of the many who sent an email on the Nothing site and got... nothing!

I'm looking forward to getting my logon to the new site. Since I don't have it yet, may I make a suggestion for the new site here? A link to Doctors Without Borders would be great, and a little bit about why you chose them as your charity would be even sweeter.

McKay and Mrs. Miller is the next Atlantis episode. Are you going to start episode threads on your new site?

When do you have time to sleep? 8-D

Any word from distributors yet for A Dog's Breakfast?

ARGH! Now there's a website!
Between you and your sister, I can say that the Hewletts are taking over my life!
Okay, not maybe my life, but at least a couple of hours a day. I need them, you know. To cook, to iron, to do the housew... Er, thank you for that website that'll help me procrastinating! (like I needed the help).

So far, it looks all good. Very classy layout, clear navigability (because I have a poor sense of direction and it also applies to websites).
I've always been in awe of people who were able to create their own websites. I've tried once, even uploaded a page that didn't look bad but I sort of lacked the enthusiasm to keep going. See, I'm not that fond of tech.

Interesting picture you used for this entry. Mars looks so cute!

I'm actually feeling proud of myself because I succeeded in avoiding fangirly comments on that picture. Because it really made me react like a fangirl.

I am a big fan of Atlantis, SG-1, scifi in general (I haven't figured out the wrestling aspect of science fiction, however!). When the show focuses on R. M., it is very enjoyable, especially how fast you talk, the science talk, you know, the yada yada yada. So I particularly enjoyed it tonight (Sept. 8) when "Jeannie" is staring out the window, and you are trying to get her attention and you call her "Katie". We backed it up, and sho nuff, you called her Katie. Personally, I LOVED it. I am the type who dearly loves little things like that. It made me want to reach out and hug both of you!
Love your blog, by the way.

Hi David: I love the way your website is progressing. I know that you must receive so much fan mail but I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to send me an autographed photo last year. You really made my day. You've done a terrific job on Stargate Atalantis, you bring such an unique freshness to the show that I look forward to watching every week. I'm a bit of a geek myself, but to quote your message on my picture - "on the inside only"

Thanks for making me feel good about myself. Keep up the good work and if there are any conventions in the Massachusetts area I'll be sure to attend.

At 3:32 PM, Blogger Bek said...

Oh man, you really are a geek! Naturally I mean that in the most affectionate way...

Ahem...

Well, the website idea is great. Yet another way to keep you insanely busy and out of further trouble. Certainly having your own website, two blogs, a tv show to act in and learn lines for, produce, write, direct, promote and all those other things you surely do - like eat, breathe, sleep (hey who needs that) and exercise (my dog would take this every minute if she could) will leave you plenty of time for Jane and Mars at the weekends.... But Mars certainly does look ... er... sleepy, perhaps exhausted and it's pretty clear he's already had his walk today and certainly not bored at all. (I assume it's just that glazed look they get sometimes from staring at the monitor too long. Many dogs don't know when to stop and get help)

Really enjoyed M&MM. The insight into the already existing characters was brilliant. It's rare to gain so much for one ep. Your sis was great but I won't discuss it further here in case sibling rivalry is still lingering on this subject. Look, Meredith - the least you could do is send her a copy of the darn episode. I'm sure plenty have threatened to mutiny already on this score so I won't reiterate.

Take care, geeky one.

Nah just kidding...Thanks for the web and blog david.

Sir:

you are my hero, even though your just playing a charactor on a fantastic TV show. your ability to show that problem solving can be a good thing makes me want to do my job even better every day. And your level of sarcasim is about as harsh as my own. Mr. Hewlett, your damn good at what you do and it is an honor to say so in this way. Atlantis is my 2nd favorite show. and I watch it every friday and look forward to the ever changing dynamics of your charactor. Live long and prosper.

*waves to people*

whispers: someone please download mckay and mrs miller to youtube.com

(david, pretend you know nothing about it. we don't want anyone getting in trouble with TPTB.)

thank you in advance to the very kind person that does this for the people without cable (like me!). otherwise, we will have to wait a year for the syndication to go thru. a year!! and we will whine and annoy people for that year. lol. thank you and hugs!

bonjour, i' m back!
I forgot to say to you, i think Mckay are more intelligent than colonel carter. You are my favourite character in stargate atlantis. Mckay are less brave than Carter buti think he 's more funny and it's why i like in Mckay. And i love when they are crossover between two series. i would like to know amanda tapping will come in cast of Atlantis now SG-1 are canceled?
Au revoir!!!!

But as I was reading it I was thinking to myself: "No way! This isn't actually David Hewlett! Like David Hewlett, Hewlett."

But lo! And Behold! It was.
I mean, it is...

So, uh, a very loud hello, and all of those greetings and things!

Just saw the McKay and Mrs.Miller episode of Atlantis and I have to say it was a great episode. Nice to see McKay's relationship with his sister on the mend and to see him just sitting down and getting to know the rest of his team at the end of the episode. So far this has been a stand out year for Atlantis. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

HI David and everybody who read this text.
It's just for say to french people to try to speak english on this blog because David Hewlett doesn't understand the french( i suppose?)so if he doesn't understand you, he can't answer to you. But it's just an advice.

CSS stylesheets I can deal with. Writing whole websites in CSS? Not so good. I've tried messing around with it before, but, I've got to say, I still love me some HTML.

I also loved me some McKay and Mrs. Miller, which was HI-LARIOUS. If only "A Dog's Breakfast" was showing at the VIFF. Then it would really be "TWO HEWLETTS, NO STOPPING, ALL SNARKING."
